It is curious that the latest event of the military announcing that it will launch a conventional navy missile to bring down the malfunctioning spy satellite comes at a time where Russia and China are trying to get the US to ban weapons in space. If the US had a more sophisticated way of bringing down the satellite through some of the classified programs over the years such as a laser, I would imagine they would do this in secret and not even be telling the public about it. Is the public announc…

The recent news that Barak Obama would delay NASA's current Human Moon missions by a few years came as good news to me. While I would rather he said he would just cancel the program outright, this move would hopefully end the program although I don't see Congressmen who represent Florida, Alabama, and Texas, letting him delay or cancel the program. Obviously it is not that I see this news as positive because I don't want us to get back to the Moon, rather it is because I don't see the current Ap…

Anyone heard anything about this? With solar power on Earth making great inroads recently, beaming it from large stations directly from Space may finally be taken seriously as signficant investments in such a system seem close.

While most people would agree that there is at least some intelligent life on this planet, what will be the impact on our society if intelligent alien life is discovered? With new planets being discovered outside our solar system more frequently than ever before, and with the addition of new telescopes and technologies about to become operational that can search for signs of life in the Universe, we as a society need to study and come to a consensus on the approprite reaction to such an event if…

First Japan, now China, and soon India. The Space Race is alive and well. Now add private U.S. companies and a renewed Russian government push and things are getting excited in the space world.
Anyone at the X-Cup this week? Please post about what you saw and heard there for your fellow Planet Spacers' to read about.

After further readig about the recent prize announcement, I noticed a major problem with it that will deter investment in this race. From what I understand, the video, images, and data will be publicly available on a Google website? If this is the case, that is good for Google as they will get visibility though their advertisiment on the site but this information is the part of the mission that has the value proposition for potential investors. A small company or group of people looking for inve…

Kind of disappointed in the task. NASA has already spent tens of millions in the past ten years on rovers and having a non-governement prize that duplicates off-the-shelf technology that the gov. already has makes no sense. It takes entrepreneurs focus and attention away from more meaningful projects that o…

Another successful shuttle flight completed. A couple of more years of shuttle flights and the program is over. Anyone going to miss the Shuttle?

With the successful launch and deployment of their Genesis 2 spacecraft, Bigelow Aerospace is right on track with their space habitat plans. These facilities when fully opreational in the next few years will revolutionize space development by providing low-cost access (compared to the government) to tourists, scientists, and companies. Let's all hope Bigelow continues with their great successes!

The other day NASA released a plan that would allow private companies 'free' use of the Station for experimental research after 2010. This is the first good policy regarding the ISS in the history of the program. By allowing small companies 'free' use (they still have to pay for transportation and other types of fees) companies will be able to try out and test their ideas and processes at a reasonable cost. If they have something they want to produce commercially or want to furhter their work, t…

One can hope that the powers that be will have learned from the mistakes of the International Space Station program management so that when the time comes for an Antarctica-style moon science station on the Lunar poles, scientists and humanity could gain useful knowledge from the station as opposed to the ISS which just continues to take in money and put out little of nothing. It has been known for years that different types of telescopes on the Moon will make the Hubble seem like a transistor r…

NASA has signed a few unfunded agreements with space companies that are developing reusable launch vehicles. Some of these companies are offering cargo services and some human transport along with cargo. NASA needs to fund the companies which offer human transport. If just one of these companies is successful then it will mark a revolution in human access to space. NASA should be applauded for finally starting to help small entrepreneurial companies, but they must put up the money to actually ac…

I may hve been a little hard on the ISS program in a previous post. There is some good coming out of the program. Bigelow Arospace likely has learned from some of the mistakes of the project and helped in the design of their superior facilities. ISS also was an initial testing ground along with the Shuttle for experimentation in space, even though industry will never use the ISS for that type of business, it should help make better use, and save some time, when companies start to use Bigelow fac…

For those of you who have yet to take even a rudimentary course in Economics, let me give you the 30 second version of why there is no such thing as the "Trillion Dollar" asteroid:
Supply and Demand
Please study this concept before you go off quoting Bob Zubrin or any other hot-air driven, economics-challenged prognostication of how a single asteroid could be worth trillions here on Earth (usually this argument is used as the lead in to "oh why oh why don't the investors see the amazing return…

Not a Shuttle docking goes by without new problems for the ISS. After 100 billion dollars with little to show for it, the ISS continues to waste money and risk lives for little gain. A poorly designed, budget-gutted station for 20 years, NASA now wants to work with industry to try and use it?! Good luck with that. Too much to operate and too little access to it. Bigelow Aerospace will make the ISS obsolete within 5 years. NASA and its partners should do the world a favor and crash the ISS into t…

OK I guess it's time to help get this network out there and visible. Let's see if we can get some people involved talking about the fantastic opportunities that are going to exist off-world in the near future.
I'm interested in hearing from people who are involved in space research, education, projects etc. If you are a student, let's connect you with other students who are of a similar mind.
The future is fantastic!

It seems that space news, once only used as a segway into the weather forecast segment of the news, where the newscaster as well as weather forecaster would make some lame space-related joke, is starting to gain respect with news producers as more of a mainstream topic, and thus is moving closer to the main headlines. This trend should continue.
