It is curious that the latest event of the military announcing that it will launch a conventional navy missile to bring down the malfunctioning spy satellite comes at a time where Russia and China are trying to get the US to ban weapons in space. If the US had a more sophisticated way of bringing down the satellite through some of the classified programs over the years such as a laser, I would imagine they would do this in secret and not even be telling the public about it. Is the public announcement about how the military intends to bring down the spysat have anything to do with negotiations on a space weapons ban proposal between China and Russia? Will be interesting to see how this plays out given last years Chinese asat test and recent weapons ban proposals.
